Course content
1. European theatre and drama in the Middle Ages. The medieval religious theatre and liturgical drama (Christmas plays, Easter plays, Passion plays, The Mysteries, Mystery play and other genres). Set design and staging conventions in religious theatre. European authors of religious drama (Jacopone da Todi, Jean Bodel, Arnoul Gréban). 2. The medieval secular theatre, genres of secular drama (farces, sottie, morality play, pastorals), the chief representatives. Set design and staging conventions in secular theatre. 3. Italian Renaissance theatre and his sub-categories, styles and forms. Drama genres (commedia erudita, the chief representatives, tragedy, pastorals, intermezzi). 4. The birth of opera in late Renaissance Italy. The Florentine Camerata (Rinuccini, Peri), the earliest Italian operas. The Venetian school of opera (Claudio Monteverdi and others representatives). The Neapolitan school of opera (Alessandro Scarlatti). 5. The development of stage design in Renaissance Italy. The chief representatives, theatre architecture, stage machinery and special-effects equipment. 6. The birth of commedia dell' arte. Characters, themes and scenarios, commedia dell' arte in performance. 7. English Renaissance theatre: from early Tudor drama to Elizabethan theatre. Playing companies and the actor in the English Renaissance theatre. Theatrical life and the establishment of permanent theatres (public and private playhouses). Staging conventions. 8. The drama before Shakespeare (John Lyly, George Peele, Robert Greene). Times of Shakespeare and his rivals (Christopher Marlowe, William Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, Thomas Dekker, Thomas Heywood). Shakespeare's followers (Thomas Middleton, John Webster, Francis Beaumont, John Fletcher). 9. Spanish Golden Age theatre. Set design and staging conventions in the theatre of Renaissance Spain. 10. Playwrights of Spanish Golden Age theatre. Lope de Vega's s predecessors (Fernando de Rojas, Juan del Encina, Gil Vicente, Lope de Rueda, Miguel Cervantes). Lope de Vega a Tirso de Molina. Pedro Calderón de la Barca.
